Will skiing be any easier for me since I can water ski?
I might be going skiing this winter and I was just wondering if it will be any easier since I water ski in the summer..
I too water and snow ski. I think you'll find some of the techniques similar. Though as you well know, when getting up in water skiing, you must keep your tips up. In effect, leaning back so your tips don't submerge and you go down/under. Though as Jim W. stated above, the leaning back is more so the tow rope doesn't pull you over forward.
In snow skiing, your weight is more over the front of the ski. If you lean back on snow skis you really have no control. If you were to lean forward on water skis, the ski would submerge and you'd fall.
Snow skis are narrowest under foot to assist in turning. Water skis are widest under foot for greater bouyancy. Snow skis have a reverse camber...with no weight on them, the base under foot does not touch the "ground". Water skis are at least flatter. When on the ground, the portion of the water ski under your foot touches the ground while the tip and tail do not.
Water skis have a rudder to keep them pointed "straight". Some water skis I've used even have a foil perpendicular to the rudder for greater control of the ski. Some snow skis used to have a "groove" in the base to help them track straighter, they no longer have that groove.
Short answer...I think snow skiing will be easier for you to learn with your water skiing background.
